Critical Behavioral Health Issues in Alaska (SUM 2012)

Reflection:
I seized this great opportunity to network with the agencies the keynote speakers represented. I had the pleasure of interacting with numerous industry professionals who locally deal with behavioral health issues specific to our state. One of the highlights was a speaker Barbara Franks shared her personal experience with suicide (the death of her son). This personal tragedy lead her to campaign and improve suicide education in the Anchorage School District.

The assignment for this course was to create a personal intervention plan for one of the target critical health issues using local resources. I learned how to create a realistic plan which could be implemented. For me, this exercise brought about a seriousness and care which transcended the academic realm and bolstered the practical side of the subject.
