The APIASF scholarship application officially closed last week. This academic year 6,869 completed applications were received. Each reader is required to review 40 applications. I have completed a little over 30 and am touched by many of the personal stories I've read thus far. The major barrier many of the essay writers' stories speak to is poverty. The National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development (National CAPACD) reported some alarming facts in 2013. The total US Poverty growth increased 27%, while the Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander Poverty growth increased a drastic 60%.

The following breakdown illustrates the realistic financial barriers these communities face in their youths' pursuit of higher education. This information and more can be found in Spotlight on Asian American and Pacific Islander Poverty (June 2013).
