I just returned from Washington state for the sole purpose of meeting Michael Tolleson, an autistic savant artist, based in Kent, who is making a slash onto the international scene. He is developing a global presence speaking about autism awareness and through his artwork. Michael presented me with an original painting title "Epiphany" for my work in the autistic community.

I am ecstatic to receive acknowledgment and praise for helping so many whose lives have been affected by autism and autism spectrum disorders. For the past decade, I aided numerous individuals who experience a wide range of physical, developmental and intellectual disabilities using a strength-based approach which dignifies and values the contribution of those society deems disabled.

Michael understands the importance of mentoring individuals on autism spectrum. He as well as I acknowledge a strength-based perspective of autism, including the potential of each person to make a difference and affect positive change in their own lives, their family's and for their communities. Michael uses his abilities as an artist to promote the concept of: "the genius of" and "the light within" autism. It is apparent from talking with Michael that he has a desire to inspire others on the spectrum and provide hope for families living with autism.

The day after we met Michael Tolleson was featured on NBC King 5 Seattle. View the video here.

I am honored to know such an amazing person and cannot wait to see where his art and advocacy takes him. To view paintings from his online gallery visit The Art of Michael Tolleson.
